What is Magnesium for horses?
Magnesium is a mineral which plays an important role in keeping your horse healthy. It is found naturally in the horse’s body, and is obtained through diet. Grass is a good source of magnesium, however not always a reliable one, so ensuring your horse is getting enough magnesium through their daily feed is important for their overall health and wellbeing.
When used as a supplement for horses, Magnesium assists with muscle and
nerve function, and has a number of benefits for horses including encouraging calm behaviour; helping with healthy hoof growth; and supporting laminitic horses.
Magnesium for horses is available in a number of variants: Magnesium oxide is one of the most popular forms of this equine supplement due to its high concentration and rapid absorbability.
What are the benefits of Magnesium for horses?
Magnesium is a mineral that plays an important role in a range of key bodily functions in horses, helping to maintain healthy muscles and nerves. Magnesium oxide is a popular equine supplement that is primarily used to help with behavioural problems in horses, including excitability and nervousness; and is also thought to have a number of other benefits.
Feeding a magnesium supplement to your horse is particularly useful for horses who appear to have naturally low levels of magnesium, resulting in a magnesium deficiency. This can manifest in a number of ways, including muscle tremors, jumpiness and sensitive skin, which is why magnesium oxide can be a helpful addition to the equine diet.
Is Magnesium safe for horses?
As Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral found in the horse’s body, Magnesium oxide is safe for horses to consume. Reassuringly, it is difficult to give a horse ‘too much’ Magnesium oxide as the body doesn’t absorb it unless it’s needed; any excess Magnesium will be excreted in urine or droppings.
Magnesium oxide is also safe for pregnant or lactating mares.
How do I feed Magnesium to my horse?
As part of our Equine Essentials range, our pure Magnesium oxide comes in a powder form that can easily be added to your horse’s daily feed. Are there any side effects of Magnesium for horses?
While Magnesium toxicity is unlikely, horses can experience diarrhoea when too much Magnesium is added to their diets. However, this is more likely when using Magnesium sulphate (Epsom Salts). Animalife Magnesium for horses uses Magnesium oxide, which comes with a lower risk of side effects.
