L-Carnitine
What are the benefits of L-Carnitine for horses?
L-Carnitine is an amino acid derivative that is naturally produced in the body. It plays a key role in energy production and the metabolism, as it transports fatty acids around your body to be burned into energy. Humans have traditionally used it as a weight loss supplement, and it has found to have similar benefits for horses. L-Carnitine can be added to a healthy diet to support exercise efforts and energy levels. It is also known to help with muscle fatigue by delaying the build-up of lactic acid, making it a great supplement for recovery after exercise.
When should I give my horse L-Carnitine?
L-Carnitine supplements may be beneficial for horses starting a new training programme, or in the run-up to an event. Horses that do a lot of endurance training, such as racing horses, may also benefit from added L-Carnitine in their diet.
Is L-Carnitine safe for horses, and are there any side effects?
As a naturally occurring substance already found in the body, L-Carnitine is safe for horses. It can also be given to mares who are pregnant or lactating.
How do I feed my horse L-Carnitine?
Our L-Carnitine supplement is part of our Equine Essentials range, and comes in a powder form that can be added to your horse’s daily feed. This provides an easy, palatable way to introduce the supplement to the animal’s diet without any disruption.
How much L-Carnitine should I feed my horse?
We recommend adding around 5 to 10 grams for every 100 kilograms of body weight to your horse’s feed per day, although this amount may vary depending its level of physical activity.
