Pea Protein
What are the benefits of pea protein for horses?
Pea protein is a dietary supplement rich in protein, iron and essential amino acids. It provides horses with all of the benefits of protein, from supporting muscle growth and recovery to maintaining healthy skin and hooves. When compared to other proteins such as whey, pea protein has higher levels of the amino acid arginine, which is thought to help build muscle mass. Pea protein is also low in sugar and is thought to help with muscle-to-fat ratios, making it the ideal choice for overweight horses who perhaps wouldn’t benefit from higher calorie protein supplements.
When and how should I feed my horse pea protein?
You may decide to add pea protein to your horse’s diet any time that they are in need of additional muscle, recovery or immunity support. This can include when an animal is training for a show or event, when a mare is pregnant or lactating or as a horse ages. Additional protein can also be beneficial for horses on mainly forage-based diets, as they may not otherwise be getting the proteins they need from their food intake.
As part of our Equine Essential range, pea protein can easily be added to your horse’s normal feed.
How much pea protein should I give my horses?
The amount of protein you add will vary depending on the weight and activity levels of your horse. On average, for every 100 kilograms of body weight, 10 to 12 grams of pea protein is recommended per day.
Are there any side effects of pea protein for horses?
Pea protein is easily digested and safe for most horses, including pregnant or lactating mares. As with most dietary supplements, there can be side effects if too much pea protein is consumed at once, such as nausea or diarrhoea. It is therefore essential to follow the feeding guidelines to avoid adding too much protein to your horses’ diet.
